Wholesale minimum orders in Algeria: choose your lot

A seller says “one carton minimum.” Before looking for a small-quantity wholesaler in Algeria, ask how many units the carton contains, which variants are compulsory and what it will cost to receive it. The supplier’s minimum order quantity and the quantity your business can absorb are different numbers.

This guide turns an advertised minimum into a specific order, then checks whether that order fits your budget. Use the product-testing guide to examine the product itself. Use the wholesale negotiation guide to discuss changes to an offer.

1. Find out what the minimum counts

MOQ means the smallest quantity the seller accepts. Shopify explains unit thresholds, value thresholds and packaging or variant constraints. This is general commercial guidance, not an Algerian rule.

Ask the seller to clarify five points for your chosen reference:

  • Units: does the minimum apply to the whole order or to each product reference?
  • Variants: can you split the quantity across colours, sizes or models? Get the permitted list and quantities for each variant.
  • Packaging: must you buy a sealed carton, a complete size run or a stated multiple? “One carton” alone is not a usable quantity.
  • Value: does the monetary threshold count goods alone, with or without taxes? Does delivery count towards it?
  • Applicable price: which price applies to the small lot you want? A price advertised for a larger tier may not apply to your order.

A local example shows why “per reference” matters: AMB International’s FAQ advertises a minimum of 50 units per reference, or a personalised quote. This is that seller’s stated policy, to reconfirm for your purchase; it is neither a national minimum nor a supplier recommendation. Do not assume different references can be combined to meet it.

2. A value minimum can require an extra carton

Fictional example, not market prices. A seller requires 30,000 DA of goods, charges 800 DA per unit and sells only complete cartons of 12.

Dividing 30,000 by 800 gives 37.5: you need at least 38 units to meet the value threshold. But 38 does not fit cartons of 12. The next permitted multiple is 48 units, costing 38,400 DA for goods, before delivery.

Both conditions must be met together. Ask for the quantity you can actually order and its total, rather than only the “minimum spend.” If the seller accepts a split carton, confirm its contents and revised price.

3. Set your purchase ceiling after keeping an operating reserve

Write down three amounts: available cash, the reserve you want to keep for selling, and what remains to receive the lot. Plan the reserve around your expected expenses: packaging, ads, calls, customer deliveries, returns and other applicable charges. It depends on your business; this guide does not prescribe a universal percentage.

BDC, the Canadian development bank, explains that inventory ties up cash and volume discounts can leave products sitting for a long time. This is a management principle, not an estimate of Algerian costs.

Another entirely fictional example. You have 50,000 DA and keep 15,000 DA for expenses after buying. Your ceiling for receiving the lot is 35,000 DA. Two offers cover the same product; delivery costs 2,400 DA in each case, with no other charges assumed in this calculation.

Units Price/unit Delivered total
24 900 DA 24,000 DA
48 850 DA 43,200 DA

The 24-unit lot leaves 26,000 DA, including your 15,000 DA reserve. The 48-unit lot leaves only 6,800 DA: it exceeds your chosen purchasing ceiling, despite a delivered unit cost of 900 DA instead of 1,000 DA. It requires 19,200 DA more cash immediately.

This checks whether you can pay for the lot while keeping the reserve. It does not prove that selling it will be profitable. Add any missing charges and assess the offers with the wholesale price-comparison guide.

4. Check the quantity you can sell, too

A lot can fit your cash budget and still be too large for your sales pace. Look at units actually sold and paid for, remaining variants and the confirmed restocking lead time. Enquiries and refused orders are not completed sales.

At an assumed seven units sold and paid for per week, 24 units represent about 3.4 weeks of sales; 48 represent about 6.9 weeks. This is a constant-pace projection, not a demand forecast. A slow-selling colour does not automatically sell at the average rate of the whole range.

For a new reference without a sales history, this division does not validate demand. Start with a measurable product and small-lot test. Calculate the selling result separately; the French COD margin guide and Arabic COD margin guide also distinguish returned, resellable inventory from cash receipts.

5. If the minimum exceeds your ceiling, request another offer

You can ask for a split carton, a trial lot at a higher unit price, an exact mixed assortment or an offer for another reference. These are requests; the supplier may decline. Recheck the delivered total and useful quantity after every response.

Receiving the goods in stages does not necessarily reduce your financial commitment. If the full lot must be paid upfront, the cash remains committed even when deliveries are staggered. Clarify what you are ordering, what you pay now and what remains payable.

If no offer meets your constraints, take the same specification to another supplier for comparison. Our price-comparison guide helps keep the lots comparable. Do not enlarge an order simply to reach an advertised threshold.

Message to send the wholesaler

Hello, for [reference], what are the minimum units, minimum per variant and minimum order value? I want [quantity and split] delivered to [commune, wilaya]. Please confirm carton contents, required multiples, whether variants can be mixed, the price for this quantity, taxes and delivery separately, the total, dated stock availability and payment terms. If this quantity is unavailable, please quote your smallest accepted lot. Please also confirm the invoice issued for the sale.

The Algerian Ministry of Commerce invoice FAQ states that sales between economic operators require an invoice, issued by the seller and requested by the buyer. A message or quote helps specify the order; it does not replace the sale invoice.
