Negotiate with a wholesaler in Algeria: price and terms

“I can lower the price if you take two cartons.” Before accepting, ask what changes: the unit count, variants, amount payable and delivery terms. To negotiate with a wholesaler in Algeria, start with a specific proposal for a lot you can actually afford and sell.

This guide follows wholesale price comparison. You have an identifiable offer and want to request a change, then assess the answer. There is no guaranteed discount or percentage that every supplier must accept.

1. Define your request before calling

Write down the exact model, quantity, acceptable colours or sizes, receiving commune and wilaya, and the maximum you can commit including known charges. Keep money available for costs after buying the stock; your order limit should not consume your whole selling budget.

Choose one main request: a better price at the same quantity, a specific variant mix, or a separately priced delivery option. Discuss other points afterwards while keeping a record of each accepted change.

Canada's Business Development Bank recommends reviewing purchasing costs, required quantities and supplier terms. This is general business guidance, not Algerian market data or a promised saving.

2. Negotiate one term at a time

These are requests to discuss, subject to the supplier's actual agreement:

  • Price: request a revised price for the same model and quantity. Confirm that material, model, packaging and pack contents stay identical.
  • Quantity: propose a smaller first lot. Confirm its price, minimum quantity and exact contents.
  • Variants: request a mix suited to your customers. Confirm units per colour, size or model and whether substitutions are allowed.
  • Transport: ask for a pickup or delivery quote. Confirm charges, destination, transport responsibility and the stated date.
  • Payment: discuss terms for this order. Confirm amounts, deadlines, recipient and the conditions for each payment.
  • Reordering: request a price for a defined repeat order. Confirm validity and quantity; stock will need to be checked again later.

A discussed option is not yet the seller's commitment. If you offer to collect the goods, include your travel, time and handling in the calculation. If payment terms change, verify the seller and payment recipient before committing; a lower price alone does not justify an advance payment.

Do not present a large future reorder as certain just to secure a discount on your first lot. Describe it as a forecast, then use a product trial to decide whether to buy again.

3. A discount can increase the cash you need

Entirely hypothetical example, not market prices. The product stays the same. These figures cover goods only, before transport and other charges.

The rows show the initial offer, a same-quantity counteroffer if accepted, then the price offered for twice the stock.

Units Unit price Total
40 800 DZD 32,000 DZD
40 780 DZD 31,200 DZD
80 760 DZD 60,800 DZD

The second proposal saves 800 DZD without adding stock. The third lowers the unit price by 5%, but requires 28,800 DZD more than the initial offer and leaves 40 additional units to sell. It may suit demand you have already observed; it exceeds a 35,000 DZD purchase limit even before delivery.

Ask for two separate answers: “What price can you offer for the planned 40 units?” and “What terms change at 80 units?” Recalculate the lot's full cost after every answer. A volume price does not establish demand for the extra units. Our lot-cost guide in French explains the purchase-cost calculation.

4. Ask what kind of reduction is offered

Articles 5 and 6 of Algeria's Executive Decree 05-468 distinguish a remise, which may relate to quantity, a rabais, which may compensate for delay or defects, and a ristourne, related to loyalty over a period. These definitions do not create an automatic entitlement to a discount.

Ask whether the price applies to this order, a quantity threshold or a later benefit. A promised reduction on your next purchase does not lower today's payment. Also confirm whether quoted amounts include taxes and transport.

Keep your product requirements intact. Algeria's Ministry of Commerce describes safety, conformity and consumer-information obligations. A discount does not replace those checks. For a defect, identify affected units and request a specific remedy; commercial compensation is not permission to resell an unsafe product.

5. Two messages to move from discussion to agreement

Request a change:

Hello, for [model and specifications], I plan to buy [quantity] units with this mix: [variants]. My maximum budget for this order received in [commune, wilaya] is [amount], including charges. Can you offer [specific change] while keeping the same product and pack contents? Please state the total, separate charges, payment terms and how long this offer is valid.

Recap the negotiated terms:

To confirm our discussion: [model], [quantity and variants], [price and reduction], [taxes], [transport and destination], total [amount], payment [terms], availability [dated confirmation], delivery [stated date], missing or defective units [agreed process]. Please confirm or correct this summary before I place the order, and specify the invoice to be issued when the sale takes place.

The official invoice FAQ says sales between economic operators require an invoice, issued by the seller and requested by the buyer. Your recap prepares the agreement; it does not replace that invoice. Check the document and goods against the agreed terms using our invoice checklist in French.
